5. Friends and models
Do you remember that from the age of 12-13, the center of gravity of your preoccupations was shifting towards the outside life; the family circle has become for you, too narrow, and the familial authority was becoming too difficult to endure? You wanted to have your own space, which would be only yours, where you could plan your future, your dreams and recapitulate your gestures, your sayings and committed deeds during the day, to decipher their meanings. You wanted to be alone. However, this seclusion, had a mirror, a witness, a new companion which was contemplating you, watching you; you would begin discussing with her, wanting to know it better and to establish with her a friendship relationship. Such relations arenât easy to establish and donât always have an amicable character: your new friend didnât always approve your actions, and sometimes, she would reprehend you by looking at you with harshness. Who was this new being that you cared so much about, the only one whose authority you would accept and whose wishes became orders for you? She was your ideal âselfâ, the model of your physical and moral being, the ideal of the personality you were going to give rise. Before the age of 12-13, you were subjugating to the family and schools norms, without asking yourself why do you have to do it and what is the importance of the persons that were ordering you. Now, you wouldnât accept subduing unless itâs with your consent, only towards persons whose authority corresponds with your new moral and physical dogmas. It was the age when you were becoming aware of the model which you wanted to resemble.
It is not the case to reconstitute here and now, together, this process of building the model wherewith you have identified yourself. I would like to remind you only that who you are today resembles in a great measure with the image of your mother, of the mother that knew to be a confidant and a friend, in which case you have regarded her moral qualities as being flawless. The person that you are today is also acceding of the figure of a teacher that has particularly impressed you by being patient with you, by understanding your aspirations and alleviating your sorrows. In the search, delineation and consolidation of your life model, you have kept numerous tastes, attitudes and feelings of novel, plays and movie heroes. But all these new and never-to-be-forgotten impressions, these experiences of yours and only yours had to be shared with someone. You shared them with you. Sometimes, you would entrust them to your notebook, your private diary, by avoiding the risk of being âbetrayedâ; your inner world had this secret character of intimacy. Sure enough, you have found a being with the same fretfulness and dreams, with the same ardor to find a new understanding, communion and excellence climate. Your model is then built in cooperation with a friend, unique and cherished until it becomes âan alter-egoâ to you.
